It’s always interesting to know how the market is looking at the end of the year and, since we’re coming to the end of 2018, we thought we’d take a look at the top 10 cars that were scrapped over the last 12 months.
First though, let’s take a look back at 2017 to see where we started.
Top 10 cars scrapped in 2017
In a study by AutoTrader, the list of the top 10 cars processed through their online scrappage tool in 2017 starts with the Volkswagen Golf.
The remaining cars on the list are as follows:

- Vauxhall Astra
- Ford Fiesta
- Vauxhall Corsa
- BMW 3 Series
- Volkswagen Polo
- Ford Mondeo
- Honda Civic
- Volkswagen Passat
The two most popular brands to be scrapped in 2017 were Ford and Volkwagen, each with 33% of the models in the top 10.
Despite the national focus on diesel car scrappage, the split between petrol and diesel was relatively equal – 51% of the total cars scrapped in 2017 were diesel powered and 49% of the total number of models were petrol.
Now that we’ve seen the 2017 stats, let’s take a look at 2018.
Top 10 cars scrapped in 2018
According to data collected by Scrap Car Comparison for 2018, the most popular car scrapped in 2018 was the Ford Focus, jumping ahead of the Volkswagen Golf – which has dropped all the way down to ninth in the list.
Just behind the Ford Focus is the Vauxhall Corsa, stepping up a few places into second place. This isn’t unusual to see – as older makes of cars reach the ends of their lifespans, especially with newer models being released, people are more likely to turn to scrapping to make some money on their vehicle.
Beyond the Corsa comes the Vauxhall Astra, closely followed by the Ford Fiesta and the Peugeot 206 to round out the top five. The Renault Clio, Ford KA, Ford Mondeo, Volkswagen Golf (as we mentioned before), and the Renault Megane finishes the top 10.

In 2018, the most popular brand of car to be scrapped was Ford, with 40% of the cars on the list bearing their insignia. Volkswagen have dropped down from 2017 with only one car from their brand in the top 10 this year. Renault was a surprise entry going from no models in the list in 2017 to two in 2018.
The other key takeaway from this list is that there is still an appetite for Ford cars on the market, meaning that people are still wanting to buy the scrapped vehicles from their owners. With regards to predictions for 2019, we would estimate that Ford will stay at the top of the manufacturers, with the most cars from their brand in the top 10, simply due to their consistency over the past few years, and the number of makes and models that they are updating. Volkswagen could reclaim a higher spot in the table but, with the rise of the Peugeot and Renault brands, we may see more people trading in older vehicles from these models as new brands come out.
