What is the Volvo scrappage scheme?

Volvo is one of the few brands that has never offered its own standalone scrappage scheme. It did, however, support the nationwide government-backed scheme in 2009.

How did the scrappage scheme work?

The 2009 Scrappage Scheme was set up by the Government to help the motoring industry recover following the economic crisis of 2008. Anyone who owned a car built before 31st July 1999, later extended to 29th February 2000, could receive a £2,000 discount on buying a new car, with £1,000 coming from the government and a further £1,000 coming from the manufacturer you were buying the car from.

Over 9,000 Volvos were scrapped as part of this scheme.

Petrol Cars:

There was no restriction on the fuel type that could be traded, and the discount was available on petrol and diesel cars alike.

Diesel Cars:

There was no restriction on the fuel type that could be traded, and the discount was available on petrol and diesel cars alike.

Electric Cars:

Volvo insisted from 2019 onwards that every single car they produce must have an electric motor, but, being a decade after the scrappage scheme, this was far too late to fall into the net for the government scheme.

Do I qualify for a Scrappage Scheme Offer?

Just because Volvo has never provided a scrappage scheme, doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to cash in on one at all. There are three that are currently based on location, due to upcoming or expanding Clean Air Schemes, and their criteria is listed below.

• London – available to London residents with a vehicle that is not ULEZ compliant
• Birmingham – available to those who work 18 hours a week or more within the Birmingham CAZ, who earn £30,000 a year or less and have owned a non-compliant vehicle since 10 September 2018
• Scotland – Available to owners of non-compliant vehicles who live within a 20km radius of a Scottish Low Emission Zone
