Volkswagen Scrappage Scheme
Currently there is no official Volkswagen scrappage scheme active. The previous scrappage scheme ended on 31/03/18 and has not been restarted. Volkswagen drivers looking to scrap their cars or vans are recommended to compare prices to maximise the payout from scrapping their vehicle.
What is the Volkswagen scrappage scheme?
The Volkswagen scrappage scheme, along with other marques falling under the Volkswagen Group umbrella, originally ran until the end of 2017, before the headline marque extended its offering until the end of the first quarter of 2018. The main premise of the scheme was to remove the highest polluting diesel-powered cars from the road after the infamous Dieselgate debacle which plagued Volkswagen, whilst also trying to boost sales figures across the board. In return for trading in a diesel-powered car with emissions standards of Euro 4 or earlier, you could save up to £6,000 on a brand new VW.
Is the Volkswagen scrappage scheme coming back?
Despite a similar scheme being used in Germany since the British scheme ended at the end of March 2018, there has been no suggestion of the VW scrappage scheme returning to the UK market any time soon.
How did the scrappage scheme work?
Volkswagen’s scrappage scheme was available as a special offer for anyone trading in a diesel-powered vehicle that was built to Euro 4 emissions standards or earlier when buying a brand-new VW. Providing you had owned the car for at least six months prior, then you could have saved varying amounts of money depending on the model you were purchasing, from £1,800 for a new up!, although an e-up! would offer £3,300 plus a government grant of £4,500, all the way up to £6,000 on a new Sharan. The Passat GTE (and Estate equivalent) also came with a £6,000 saving, plus a £2,500 Plug-In Grant.
Petrol Cars:
The scheme was only open to diesel powered cars, meaning no petrol cars could be traded in under the scheme, although they were available to be bought.Â
Diesel Cars:
The scheme was intended purely to remove the highest-polluting diesels following the infamous Emissions Scandal of 2014. Any diesel built to Euro 4 standards or earlier could be traded in.Â
Electric Cars:
While no electric cars could be traded in, some of the biggest savings on offer were to be found with electric and hybrid options from Volkswagen, thanks to additional grants for purchasing electric cars from the Government.
Do I qualify for a Scrappage Scheme Offer?
If you missed out on the Volkswagen scrappage scheme then you could still be eligible to use a scrappage scheme. Currently, three location-based scrappage schemes are in place around some of the newest Clean Air Schemes in the country, with their own specific criteria, which you may be able to make use of.
- London – available to London residents with a vehicle that is not ULEZ compliant
- Birmingham – available to those who work 18 hours a week or more within the Birmingham CAZ, who earn £30,000 a year or less and have owned a non-compliant vehicle since 10 September 2018
- Scotland – Available to owners of non-compliant vehicles who live within a 20km radius of a Scottish Low Emission Zone
