Tesla Scrappage Scheme
Tesla is currently offering £2,000 off the purchase of new vehicles when trading in an old petrol or diesel car. Tesla drivers looking to scrap their current cars or vans are recommended to compare prices to maximise the payout from scrapping their vehicle.
What is the Tesla scrappage scheme?
In June 2023, Tesla unveiled its first ever scrappage scheme bonus to help owners of older petrol or diesel cars make the switch to owning an electric vehicle. The scheme offers up to £2,000 off the price of a brand new Model 3 or Model Y, providing the vehicle you are trading in meets the relevant criteria.
How does the scrappage scheme work?
On the face of it, Tesla’s scrappage scheme looks very appealing, with the added £2,000 discount for a brand new Tesla bringing the cost of electric vehicles, which often price out the average motorist, down to a more manageable figure. In order to qualify, you must receive confirmation that your car’s trade-in value is below £2,000 between June 1st and June 30th 2023. However, the deal is only available to those trading in a petrol or diesel car that is worth less than £2,000. This trade in figure will then be added to the £2,000 bonus to create a total price deduction.
This means that, for example, if you were to trade in a petrol or diesel car that was worth £1,500, you would take the trade-in value of £1,500 and add it to the £2,000 bonus, creating a total discount of £3,500 off of a new Tesla Model 3 or Model Y.
Petrol Cars:
Petrol cars worth less than £2,000 were eligible to be scrapped as part of Tesla’s scrappage scheme.
Diesel Cars:
Diesel cars worth less than £2,000 were eligible to be scrapped as part of Tesla’s scrappage scheme.
Electric Cars:
Tesla’s scrappage scheme is intended to remove older petrol and diesel vehicles and to get more electric cars on the road. As such, no electric cars qualify for the scrappage scheme.
Do I qualify for a Scrappage Scheme Offer?
Just because you don’t qualify for Tesla’s new scheme doesn’t mean that you can’t make the most of other schemes nationwide. Three location-based scrappage schemes are currently in operations, and their eligibility rules and regulations are explained below:
- London – available to London residents with a vehicle that is not ULEZ compliant
- Birmingham – available to those who work 18 hours a week or more within the Birmingham CAZ, who earn £30,000 a year or less and have owned a non-compliant vehicle since 10 September 2018
- Scotland – Available to owners of non-compliant vehicles who live within a 20km radius of a Scottish Low Emission Zone
