MG Scrappage Scheme
Currently there is no official MG scrappage scheme active. The previous scrappage scheme ended on 30/09/20 and has not been restarted. MG drivers looking to scrap their cars or vans are recommended to compare prices to maximise the payout from scrapping their vehicle.
What is the MG scrappage scheme?
The MG scrappage scheme, known as the ‘swappage scheme’ was a special offer from MG that provided owners of cars that were at least seven years old the opportunity to trade in their older car in return for savings of up to £7,200 on a brand new car. If you had a car that was registered on or before the 30th June 2013 and had owned it for at least 90 days, then you were able to make the most of this offer.
Is the MG scrappage scheme coming back?
There have been no suggestions that the MG scrappage scheme will be coming back any time soon, but we shall keep this page fully updated if there are any hints at a new incentive.
How did the scrappage scheme work?
MG’s scheme was one of the most generous schemes available, depending on the model that you ordered from MG after trading in your old car. Note we said trade in rather than scrap, and that’s because there was no guarantee that your car would actually be scrapped, and the car being traded in had to be taxed and in full working order in order for the offer to be valid. Assuming your car met this criteria, was registered on or before the 30th June 2013 and had been owned by you for at least 90 days, then you could save anywhere between £1,120 for a base model MG3, or even up to a maximum of £7,280 if ordering an MG ZS EV in Exclusive trim.
Petrol Cars:
There was no restriction on the type of car being traded in with the MG swappage scheme, providing you met all other criteria.
Diesel Cars:
There was no restriction on the type of car being traded in with the MG swappage scheme, providing you met all other criteria.
Electric Cars:
While unlikely to be traded in, the earliest models of Nissan LEAF (the first mass-produced pure electric vehicle) would have been eligible for the MG scheme thanks to their age. You could also purchase an MG ZS EV as part of this scheme, which offered the largest savings of the entire MG range.
Do I qualify for a Scrappage Scheme Offer?
If you’ve missed out on the MG Swappage Scheme, you may still be able to benefit from one of the three location-based schemes currently in operation with the expansion of Clean Air Schemes across the country. Details of these schemes are outlined below:
- London – available to London residents with a vehicle that is not ULEZ compliant
- Birmingham – available to those who work 18 hours a week or more within the Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone, who earn £30,000 a year or less and have owned a non-compliant vehicle since 10 September 2018
- Scotland – Available to owners of non-compliant vehicles who live within a 20km radius of a Scottish Low Emission Zone.
