Mercedes Scrappage Scheme
Currently there is no official Mercedes scrappage scheme active. The previous scrappage scheme ended on 30/06/18 and has not been restarted. Mercedes drivers looking to scrap their cars or vans are recommended to compare prices to maximise the payout from scrapping their vehicle.
What is the Mercedes scrappage scheme?
The Mercedes scrappage scheme was a special offer/scrap incentive held by Mercedes in mid-2018 to try and bolster their sales and remove some of the highest-polluting vehicles form the roads in a similar vein to the government-backed scrappage scheme of 2009 and in the wake of the diesel emissions scandal of 2015. When scrapping an eligible car, customers were given a discount of up to £1,750 on a brand new Mercedes-Benz.
Is the Mercedes scrappage scheme coming back?
The previous Mercedes scrappage scheme came at a time when many other manufacturers were offering similar schemes, and there hasn’t been any hint that a new scheme may return.
How did the scrappage scheme work?
Anyone who owned a diesel-powered car that complied to Euro 4 emissions standards or earlier, and was registered on or before the 31st December 2011 was eligible for the scheme, providing they had owned that vehicle for at least six months. If all of these criteria were met, then a saving of £1,750 was available on a brand new diesel or plug-in hybrid Mercedes, however the A-Class, C-Class, G-Class and CLS were all excluded from the offer.
Petrol Cars:
Petrol cars were not eligible to be traded in, and the new car being purchased had to be either a diesel or plug-in hybrid option.
Diesel Cars:
Only diesel cars were eligible to be traded in, following Dieselgate, as this scheme was intended to remove some of the most pollutive cars from the roads. Diesel was one of only two options of fuel types available to be purchased through the scheme.
Electric Cars:
No electric cars could be traded in, but you could purchase a plug-in hybrid as part of the scheme, receiving a £1,750 discount for using the incentive.
Do I qualify for a Scrappage Scheme Offer?
If you missed out on the Mercedes scrappage scheme then all is not lost, as you could still be eligible for one of three scrappage schemes still active across the nation. There are specific criteria that you have to match in order to utilise these other incentives, of which we have detailed below:
- London – available to London residents with a vehicle that is not ULEZ compliant
- Birmingham – available to those who work 18 hours a week or more within the Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone, who earn £30,000 a year or less and have owned a non-compliant vehicle since 10 September 2018
- Scotland – Available to owners of non-compliant vehicles who live within a 20km radius of a Scottish Low Emission Zone.
