Alfa Romeo Scrappage Scheme
Currently there is no official Alfa Romeo scrappage scheme active. The previous scrappage scheme ended on 30/09/17 and has not been restarted. Alfa Romeo drivers looking to scrap their cars or vans are recommended to compare prices to maximise the payout from scrapping their vehicle.
What is the Alfa Romeo scrappage scheme?
Alfa Romeo’s previous scrappage scheme was part of the wider scheme from the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group and was available to owners of cars that were built to Euro 4 emissions standards or earlier – effectively any car built and registered before 1st January 2010. To make use of the scheme you had to have owned your car for at least six months, and would have been given a discount on a new Alfa Romeo. The discount offered changed depending on the model you were purchasing, up to a maximum of £5,300 on a Giulietta. These discounts could be very good value for you as a customer, or potentially bad value as, unlike the usual scrap or salvage service which sees values determined by your car’s weight or resale value, these were flat rates that did not change whatever vehicle you were trading in as part of the scheme.
Is the Alfa Romeo scrappage scheme coming back?
There has been no suggestion that there will be a new Alfa Romeo scrappage scheme since the last one ended in 2017. There may still be options to trade in your old car ahead of buying a new Alfa Romeo, but this will simply be a part-exchange and there is no guarantee that you’ll be getting a fair deal, unless you have already done some research into what your car may be worth on the second hand market.
How did the scrappage scheme work?
Alfa Romeo’s scrappage scheme aimed to boost the company’s new car sales, whilst also hoping to remove the highest polluting vehicles from the roads following the emissions scandal of the mid-2010s. All cars built to Euro 4 diesel emissions standards or earlier were able to partake in the scheme, and you had to have owned the vehicle for at least six months before you could make use of the scheme. Once you’d traded in your car, you were given a discount on a new Alfa Romeo car, with the savings amount depending on the model you were ordering. For example, you could save £2,500 on a MiTo, £3,250 on a Giulia or £5,300 on a Giulietta.
Petrol Cars:
Any petrol car, provided it was built or registered before 1st January 2010 and to emissions standards Euro 4 or earlier, was able to be used in this scheme.
Diesel Cars:
Like petrol cars, any diesel built to Euro 4 emission standards or earlier were able to be traded in as part of the scrappage scheme.
Electric Cars:
To date, Alfa Romeo is yet to produce a fully-electric vehicle. However, the company plans to be fully-electric by 2027, with its first EV aiming to hit the market in 2024.
Commercial Vehicles:
Alfa Romeo does not produce a range of commercial vehicles such as vans or trucks, and therefore is unlikely to offer any deals on an old one. London’s ULEZ, Birmingham’s CAZ and Scotland’s LEZ scrappage schemes feature specific rules for commercial vehicles, offering large returns depending on certain criteria.
Do I qualify for a Scrappage Scheme Offer?
Even without Alfa Romeo’s scrappage scheme being in place any more, you could still qualify for a scrappage scheme elsewhere, if you meet certain criteria.
The following clean air zone schemes are currently in operation, and we have listed some of the basic eligibility rules around them:
- London – available to London residents with a vehicle that is not ULEZ compliant
- Birmingham – available to those who work 18 hours a week or more within the Clean Air Zone, who earn £30,000 a year or less and have owned a non-compliant vehicle since 10 September 2018
- Scotland – Available to owners of non-compliant vehicles who live within a 20km radius of a Scottish Low Emission Zone
