This week marks Recycle Week across the UK, which is now in its 17th year. This year’s theme celebrates the continued efforts of the nation to recycle despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a nation, the number of cars we’re recycling is on the up, and we couldn’t be happier. Paul Mayhew, President of EuRIC’s Plastic Recycling Branch (EPRB) states that having higher levels of recyclable thermoplastics in cars of 25% by 2025, 30% by 2030 and 35% by 2035 is entirely realistic.
Changes that are likely to be implemented in the future involve dismantling and fluid recovery procedures or seat–foam recovery as well as the increase in electric and hybrid cars. Legislation introduced in 2015 ensures that 95 percent of a vehicle’s weight is re-used, recycled and recovered.
That’s a huge number of vehicles finding a new lease of life, but what exactly does the average scrap car become?
