How to SORN a car with no V5

The easiest method to SORN a car without a V5C logbook is to use the 16-digit reference number from your V11 tax reminder document. If it’s been a while since this reminder came through, then unfortunately there’s no easy way to SORN a vehicle without your logbook. The simplest way in this instance would be for you to request a new one. SORNing a vehicle requires you to fill out a V890 form, but to request a new V5 you’ll also need to complete a V62. You must get a new logbook to SORN your car, and this will cost £25.

What do I do if I can’t find my logbook to SORN a car?

If you can’t find your car’s logbook, then you will need to request a new one before you apply for a SORN. As above, requesting a new logbook is not difficult, but you will have to pay £25 for the new document.

If you’re looking to SORN a vehicle within a month of receiving a V11 tax reminder, then you can also use the 16-digit number from here to SORN the vehicle. This number will only be valid for the month before and one month after the tax expires.

How to get a new V5C logbook

To get a new V5C logbook, you’ll need to complete a V62 form from the DVLA website. This will apply for a new vehicle registration certificate (the official name for a V5C/logbook). You can apply for a duplicate log book online if you do not need to change any details, and you can tax the car at the same time if needed. After application, the logbook will usually arrive within five working days.

How do I tax a SORN car without logbook?

This situation is exactly the same as requesting a SORN without the logbook, only in reverse. If you haven’t got your vehicle’s logbook and are its registered keeper, then you’ll need to request a new one as soon as possible. If you have your car’s tax reminder, then you can use the 11-digit reference found on your reminder letters. However, it’s worth remembering that you probably won’t have a reminder in date if your car has been registered as SORN. It’s also worth bearing in mind that as soon as your car has been taxed, the SORN will be removed.

Can I SORN a vehicle without my tax reminder?

If you haven’t got your V11 tax reminder to hand, then you can still SORN your car by using your V5C logbook. If you are already the registered keeper of the car, then you’ll need your 11-digit reference number from the V5C. If you’ve just bought the car, then you must use the reference number from the V5C/2 new keeper supplement. In both circumstances you will also need the car’s registration number.

SORN my vehicle by phone

You can SORN your vehicle by phone should you prefer, but much like the online process, you’ll need to have either your V5 or V11 reminder to hand. Only the registered keeper can make this call, and you’ll need the above documents to be able to register as SORN.

If you are not the registered keeper, then you must SORN your vehicle via post using a V890 form.

How can I declare my car scrapped without V11

Declaring your car as scrap without any documents is still possible. All you need to do is write a letter to the DVLA explaining that you have scrapped the car, ensuring all of your details are included. This letter must include the following:

  • Your full name
  • Your address
  • Car make
  • Car model
  • Scrap yard/ATF/dismantler name
  • Scrap yard/ATF/dismantler VAT number

While it is possible to do this without a logbook, it is highly recommended that you replace it before you declare the car as scrapped. If there are any issues with your declaration, such as getting lost in the post or an email glitch, then you will still legally be the registered keeper of the car. If any penalties were to then arise, they would be your problem.

Failure to SORN a vehicle if it’s untaxed could result in you receiving a fine for an untaxed vehicle. These penalties are automated by the DVLA’s system. SORN will not automatically be put in place if you don’t tax your car, so you’ll need to do this manually.
