If you’ve had a rusty, broken old vehicle taking up precious space on your driveway, you may well find yourself willing to pay for someone to remove it for you, in much the same way you would have garden waste or building rubble taken away.
However, the process with car scrapping is different and (spoiler alert!), not only do you not have to pay for it, but scrap dealers will actually pay you to come and collect your old scrap car for you. Learn more about how and why this works here.
So, I don’t have to pay for my scrap vehicle to be taken away?
No, you don’t need to pay a penny – scrap dealers will come and collect almost any scrap vehicle and pay you for the remains, even if it’s not in working condition, has a flat tyre or the car keys are lost.

Why do scrap dealers pay for scrap vehicles?
Once they’ve collected your vehicle, car dealers will strip the vehicle of any working parts for either reuse or resale – this could be anything from the battery to the radio or the doors. If there’s anything they can fix up, then they’ll do the same with that. Then, a lot of the materials used in car parts can be stripped and sold separately, even if the part itself could never be functional again. Finally, scrap metal itself can be sold and recycled for use in other products, including new cars. So that lump of metal that may seem fairly value-less to you, could offer plenty of value to those scrap dealers, albeit with a fair bit of scrapping work involved first!
That’s why they’ll pay to come collect your vehicle – it does you the favour of removing a car which is either irreparable or not worth fixing (you can see more reasons why people scrap their cars here). Then they’re able to get to work on dismantling the remains.
Just be aware that scrap dealers are not legally permitted to pay in cash, so you’ll need a bank account for them to transfer funds to. You’ll also need to make sure that you have the correct paperwork to hand, including the car’s logbook and personal identification.

How do I find out how much my scrap car is worth?
So, if you’ve decided it’s time to scrap your old car, van or motorcycle, then it’s time to find a good quote. How much it’s worth depends on a lot of different factors, from the weight of the car (because a heavier weight of scrap metal means more value for the dealers) to the condition of the bodywork and whether all the parts are in working order. While you could attempt to sell some parts separately, such as alloy wheels or the battery, you’re unlikely to get a great price for these alone, and will certainly make more by selling the car as a single unit.
Calling around to get quotes can be time consuming and frustrating, that’s why here at Scrap Car Comparison we can help you compare scrap quotes from our wide network of trusted dealers in just 30 seconds. With immediate access to hundreds of dealers across the country, you’ll be sure to find someone able to take your car and give you the best payment for it too.
